Notice the pattern: the biggest, most famous national grants have the most applicants and the lowest odds. How to find grants nobody else is applying to

The famous grants are famous, so everyone applies. Your edge is finding the quiet ones. Do this in one focused hour:

  1. Search like a local, not a founder. Try “youth business grant [your city],” “student entrepreneur award [your county],” and “[your state] high school pitch competition.” Local results are where your odds are highest.
  2. Check your community’s institutions. Community foundations, credit unions, the chamber of commerce, and big libraries run small grant programs. Their sites are ugly and their programs are under-applied.
  3. Follow the cause, not the money. Building something for, say, reducing food waste? Search “food waste grant student” or “youth climate grant.” Cause-based funders love a young founder.
  4. Ask a teacher or counselor. They get these emails constantly and forward none of them. Ask directly: “Do you know any grants or competitions for students starting a company?”
  5. Set a Google Alert for “high school startup grant” and “youth entrepreneur competition [current year]” so deadlines come to you.
